CAPSULE COLLECTION CELEBRATING THE GLAMOROUS LEGACY OF KENZO AND KANSAI YAMAMOTO

Kenzo Takada, known for his signature floral prints, was the first Japanese designer who took the French capital by storm almost overnight due to his romantic style, with its eclectic mix of color, touches of exoticism, ethnic prints, and folksy embroidery. His designs suited the mood of the 1970s but adapted well to the slicker look of the 1980s and 1990s. While Kansai Yamamoto has become synonymous with his avant-garde style – sculptural tailoring which wraps and envelopes the body, a layered approach to dressing, and the use of bright color and pattern.
Last year cruelly took the lives of two Japanese trailblazers who left colorful and innovative marks in the fashion industry: Kenzo Takada and Kansai Yamamoto. To commemorate the legacy they both left behind in the fashion world, Kenzo creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista brought the two together by designing a capsule collection that married the motifs and artworks from Kansai’s archives with the vibrant prints of Kenzo – a combination that worked well given both designers’ obsessions with Animalia and Japanese iconography. This month, Shopper’s Alley takes a closer look at the exclusive collection below:
