Shopper’s Alley Style Retrospective: Lady Gaga

Shopper’s Alley Style Retrospective: Lady Gaga

Unconventional, experimental, provocative – Lady Gaga is more than just a chart-topping songstress. She is a creative visionary, having won six Grammys, several Guinness World Records, and awards from the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Like the great pop divas before her – cue Cher, Madonna, or Britney Spears, Stefani Joanne Germanota (as her real name is called) has made it a habit to reinvent her image every few years. In one season, she would wear an outrageous meat dress, then shedding it for a paper-doll inspired Commes Des Garçons look. Then, in 2016, the singer made another radical shift, venturing into the country music genre with her hit album Joanne. As she enters a new phase in 2018, adding movie star to the many hats she wears, get to know some of our most favorite Gaga looks of all time in our latest luxury review.

1. In Alexander McQueen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

Right before she stripped down into a boundary-breaking meat dress onstage, Lady Gaga showed up at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in this Renaissance-like Alexander McQueen dress, part of the designer’s last collection before his untimely passing the same year. Featuring a bejeweled collar, voluminous patterned fabrics, and controversial armadillo heels, this look blurs the lines between art and couture.

2. In Armani Privé at the 2011 Grammy Awards

The following year, Gaga turned heads once more in this intergalactic Armani Privé number at the 2011 Grammy Awards. What makes this spectacular is its avant-garde construction, with Swarovski crystal-laced threads forming like a supernova in the solar system.

3. In Tom Ford, September 2016

In 2016, Lady Gaga toned down her usual fashion fireworks, trading it for rougher, edgier looks that evoke the attitude of country and rock n’roll stars Dolly Parton and Debbie Harry. Here, the musician looks rather dapper in her black and white Tom Ford tuxedo, which she paired with a wide, crystal-brimmed hat and platform boots.

4. In Givenchy, A Star Is Born premiere, 2018

Now here’s a look to suit the silver screen. For the Los Angeles premiere of her film A Star is Born, Gaga wore a custom Givenchy Haute Couture gown made by designer Clare Waight Keller. This glimmering creation is complemented with a matching cape, beautifully handwoven in silver embroidered lace, as well as a set of Bulgari diamond jewelry. The number also pays tribute to Barbra Streisand’s 1976 adaptation of the film, in which her character wears a similar-looking dress as she accepts an award at the Grammys. We just love how it makes her all the more ethereal.

 5. In Valentino Haute Couture at the 2018 Venice Film Festival

This is one actual walking fairytale! At the 2018 Venice Film Festival, Lady Gaga stunned fans, photographers, and other celebrities on the red carpet, wearing this over-the-top princess gown by Valentino Haute Couture. Fittingly named ‘Flamingo’ by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, the dress features pink feathers covering nearly every inch of the creation.
