Hublot: Making Horological Magic Out of Precious Gold
As one of the leading Swiss watchmakers, Hublot is a brand noted for their signature use of material – actively making use of top-notch scientific research and engineering to set their timepieces apart. Behind closed doors, the laboratory becomes their creative playground, resulting in stylish and innovative iterations such as the scratchproof Magic Gold.
In our latest luxury review, let’s take a look at how this precious material is made, and the unique horological masterpieces that have been created out of it.
How Magic Gold came about is a result of 2 years of successful research, which Hublot made in collaboration with the metallurgy department of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of Switzerland’s leading research institutions.
More than simply finding and shaping the right gold, Hublot and EPFL fused the material with boron carbide, a special type of ceramic. This brought about an alloy of 18 carat gold which surpasses traditional alloys in hardness and scratch resistance, while conserving the best properties of the 2 materials.
This production process is incredibly time-consuming and meticulous, with only 300 to 350 Magic Gold watches made per year. In an interview with Robb Report, Luca Bianco, Hublot’s material science engineer says, “The process is so time-consuming that this is all we can make… a Magic Gold watch is very rare.”
OUR FAVORITE MAGIC GOLD TIMEPIECES
Today, Hublot has currently made use of Magic Gold most prominently in their Big Bang Collection – along with another partnership with an iconic Italian automaker. Take a look at our favorite Magic Gold timepieces below.
- BIG BANG MECA 10 Magic Gold
The BIG BANG MECA 10 Magic Gold is where the scratchproof metal meets Meccano movement, which for us brilliantly disrupts the codes of traditional watchmaking.
The watch features one-of-a-kind mechanics, with two parallel barrels and a rack-driven power reserve indication system, along with a manually wound skeleton mechanism that displays the regulating organ at 7 o’clock, paired with small seconds. Exclusivity is part of its appeal too, with only 200 pieces available worldwide.
- SPIRIT OF BIG BANG FULL MAGIC GOLD 45 mm
A modern classic, the Spirit of Big Bang Full Magic Gold is a sporty timepiece with even more action-packed complications. Beyond its elegant polished sapphire crystal case and H-shaped titanium screws, it’s also adorned with a self-winding skeleton and chronograph movement – making it the ideal watch for anyone always on the move.
- BIG BANG FERRARI MAGIC GOLD
Now here’s a watch that truly delivers both form and function. The Big Bang Ferrari is the latest release in Hublot and Ferrari’s more than 7 years of collaboration, combining the new design of the Big Bang Unico and the striking aesthetic language of the iconic automaker.
Only limited to 250 pieces, it comprises a wide range of horological innovations. From a tachymeter-style minute counter, to a date aperture in gear selector mode, and even metal hardware carved in the shape of a metal horse, it’s a piece that brings the adrenaline of the roadway into one’s wrist.
