Hermès Le Sur-Mesure: Where Imagination Is Your Limit

Hermès Le Sur-Mesure: Where Imagination Is Your Limit

From their silk scarves, to their halter tops, to their iconic Birkins, Hermès has a special place in the hearts of many fashion insiders and jet-setters around the world. Yet behind their famous creations is a special projects division not many would know about: the Hermès Le Sur-Mesure, meaning made-to-measure.

While bespoke goods have become commonplace in other heritage houses, Le Sur-Mesure takes the concept further. Far beyond bags with monogrammed initials, clients may request for any piece they dream of. From bags, to suitcases, garments, or even vacation home furnishings, the options seem to be limitless.

In fact, their discerning clients have come up with other, more unique requests, including custom armchairs coated in their signature brown leather, perfectly formed boxing gloves, an Aston Martin with gold calfskin and New Zealand green wool upholstery, and even the cabin of a 12-meter dayboat.

Whatever the extravagance, this will be attended to by their team of dedicated designers, artisans, and engineers, who make their magic in a facility separate from Hermès’ famed ready-to-wear and standard leather goods divisions.

Understandably, the factory adheres to an ultra-strict closed door policy, reserved for the eyes of only the most high-profile clients.

What makes Le Sur-Mesure even more special is its discreet labeling. “It will never be written big: ‘Here is my Le Sur-Mesure Hermès bag,’” according to the atelier’s managing director Christophe Beltrando, in an interview with publication Surface magazine.

Still, some requests are rejected, seen as not in line with the Hermès brand values. “One guy who owned this super 1980s-style yacht talked to us,” Alex de Beaufort, artistic director of Le Sur-Mesure says in the same magazine interview, then shaking his head. “Our best ambassador is the product and we must be aware of that always,” he adds.

Indeed, while their crocodile skin handbags have become a status symbol, Hèrmes also has a place for those in search of something more special.
