A TRIP TO MEMORY LANE FOR MENSWEAR IN LOUIS VUITTON S/S 2020
The Spring/Summer collection of Louis Vuitton for 2020 was brimming with romance and naivety as the newly appointed artistic director, Virgil Abloh, incorporated pastels, bright hues, and wild flowers to his first Louis Vuitton collection that is ironically for men. Place Dauphine was closed for public as it turned into a relaxed venue for the crowd to enjoy the Parisian air and the authenticity of Louis Vuitton. The entire setting gave the fashionable spectators a sense of nostalgia as it brought them back to their childhood with inflatable castles, crepe stands, monogrammed mini Eiffel towers that served as toys, bubbles, and balloons with the iconic LV imprinted on it. As an emphasis on the childish theme, the press kits that served as an invitation was a DIY kite to remind the people to look back into their childhood and be inspired from the innocence of it.
The palette seen on the runway was quite surprising for the male market as it consisted of lavenders, salmon pinks, seafoam greens, butter yellows, powder blues, and fuschia on loose-fitting suits and streetwear. But there is still a hint of masculinity in it as Abloh’s fashion roots, his label Off-White, is evident in the collection. He luxuriated comfort and versatility through the hoodies, ponchos, cargo pants, crew-neck shirts, and footwear. With a twist, he incorporated his gardener-inspired theme on the accessories such as gloves, rain boots, and straw hats.
The highlight of the collection was the flowers – especially wild flowers – as seen on straw hats, bags, earring, and as embroidery on trousers and coats. For Abloh, it was used as a “naturally occurring metaphor for diversity.”
His advocacy is evident on the models who graced the cobbled stones of Place Dauphine. He included Song Mino, a rapper who hailed from South Korea; Hector Bellerin, a Spanish footballer; and Octavian, who is a British-French rapper from London in the list of his diverse models. He further noted that, “youth is global. We are all one. We are the world.”
